Losing our Religion?

There’s an old saying in Sweden: “Swedes visit church only four times in their lives, when they get baptized, confirmed, married, and when they die.” This statement is spoken in jest, but there is some truth to it. Today, even this is inconsistent with modern times, as increasing numbers of Swedes opt out from celebrating these rites of passage within the physical confines of the Church of Sweden. But then there’s Christmas, a time when Christianity in Sweden experiences an annual boost, as churches around the land fill up with people reviving the religion seemingly lost to them for the rest of the year. To help us understand this trend, we turn to Antje Jackelén, the recently elected bishop of Lund.
