Creating Mötesplats Österlen, one of Österlen’s most ambitious eateries, has not been cheap and it certainly has not been easy. In fact, the SEK30m renovation of the old Örum school almost resulted in the collapse of the whole building.

Fortunately, it was possible to save the structure and continue the restoration. Today the old school house located between Ystad and Simrishamn, on the open plain between the villages Hannas and Löderup, has been transformed into a comfortable and modern design hotel with one of the countries most celebrated gourmet restaurant.

The smoke-free hotel is small and offers a warm, relaxed, and almost home-like atmosphere with an elegant and sober interior. The 15 double rooms are decorated in light colours and have oak wood floors and Persian carpets. All rooms are equipped with air condition, shower, tiled-bathrooms and wireless Internet access.

Guests are invited to enjoy the beautiful and comfortably furnished library with its open fireplace, ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif or for enjoying a good book.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy at Mötesplats Österlen, including expert-led cooking classes, wine tasting and golf at nearby courses such as Tomelilla, Abbekås, Ystad, Lilla Vik or Djupadal.

Motorcycle enthusiast will be thrilled to discover that the hotel keeps two classic Triumph Bonneville’s available for rental, complete with a packed picnic lunch. Afterwards, there’s the opportunity to make use of the recently installed jacuzzi.

Indeed, Mötesplats Österlen offers a great hotel experience, but it is the restaurant that has brought fame to Örum. No wonder, considering that the whole establishment is headed up by master chef, Anders Vendel, who is skilfully assisted in the kitchen by chef Håkan Olssson.

Anders was a Sweden’s Chef of the Year finalist in 2003 and 2004 and an Olympic medallist in 2000 and 2004. Håkan in turn, won Sweden’s Chef of the Year bronze medal in 2005.

The cuisine at Mötesplats Österlen is prepared in a sophisticated, creative and playful way making maximum use of local and seasonal produce in a way that is not so distant from what was served at the former legendary culinary institution Petri Pumpa in Lund during it’s best days.

The restaurant offers a three and a six-course menu that includes Nordic Cod with Crayfish Vinaigrette, Beef Brisket ”Foie Gras”, Tarragon and Truffle flavoured Sole, Chorizo spiced Lamb from Erikstorps farm, selected Italian cheeses and a Champagne and Hazelnut crème with Rhubarbs.

Asparagus is grown locally and a premier asparagus menu will be offered from the beginning of May. Vegetarian menus are available on request.

Matching wine menus are creative and well composed, although somewhat pricy.

Since it first opened in the summer of 2002, Mötesplats Österlen has lined up great reviews, including top rankings by The White Guide, Dagens Industri and Gourmet. Most recently, the Italian gastronomy guide Gambero Rosso ranked the old school in Örum among Sweden’s top three restaurants.

When asked about the praise, chef Vendel comments: ”It’s an honour to be thought of that highly, but the truth is that a restaurant is no better than what it’s capable of serving its current guests. That is why we consider our guests the most important critics to please”. Well said!

I have been to Mötesplats Österlen and I can tell you, as this article states, this is a fantastic place not to miss, even for the Sunday Sports TV show. The food is in a sophisticated and creative, using local and seasonal produce. I went a long way to check it as it has a fantastic reputation internationally as one of the best Scandinavian restaurants.
